Catherine and Christian were born in Granville. The beauty of their home couldn’t shield them from misfortune: their mother passed away and the family business went under. Mr Dior and his younger daughter moved to the south of France, near Grasse — surrounded by flowers and considered the cradle of perfumery. It was there that Catherine developed her deep bond with flowers.
When World War II broke out, the siblings were living in Paris. Catherine met Hervé des Charbonneries, her great love and fellow Resistance collaborator. Under the Nazi occupation, they both passed intelligence about German troops to the British government. In 1944, Catherine was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to the Ravensbrück concentration camp.
A year later, she was liberated. The French government awarded her a flower stall at Les Halles, and from that point on she devoted herself to cultivation in the south of France.
The Perfume That Bears Her Name
In 1947, Christian Dior was about to unveil a collection that broke with post-war austerity — full of joy, luxury, and optimism. He wanted to accompany it with a perfume that symbolised love. He commissioned perfumers Jean Charles and Paul Vacher to create something that smelled of love.
The perfume they created was impossible to ignore: it filled every room with an aroma thick with southern flowers. All it needed was a name. After days of searching, one morning Catherine walked into the atelier and an assistant exclaimed: «Voilà, Miss Dior». The perfect name for a fragrance that was passionate, romantic, and resistant — just like her.
